Thieving Thursday - Taupe and Cream

Hello my lovelies, thanks for popping in today for more thieving!

Kellyann commented last week that most of us reading or writing  this type of blog will invariably be seasoned thieves when it comes to stealing styles from magazines, TV characters, people on the street and other blogs.  Heavens I've done it all and done it most of my life!

The steal starts when you spot something you like and think "I'd like to copy that look".  In my case, it's usually followed by "and I've got something very similar (and very old) lurking in my wardrobe (archives)".  And so my steals are usually borne.

Today's started with me stalking a cardi.  Yup, like I need  another cardi! But I was drawn to a winterweight version of my summer trapeze cardi which I wear A LOT.

As I looked at the pic I realised that the look was very me, but a me about 15 years ago.  I have light cream trousers from back then (a silk/linen mix), but they are just as in the picture - extremely wide.  And as much as I liked all those neutrals, the outfit doesn't quite work for the life I lead now.  It's a bit, er, too posh!

So I adapted the look to make it wearable for my retirement life.

I started with the silk/lace cami (La Redoute), added the kind of linen trousers I wear throughout the summer and topped this with my taupe trapeze cardi from The White Company (all old).

I added a silver belt and a taupe shoulder bag, then added silver jewellery to echo the belt and chain strap of the bag, and pewter sandals.

And thus, for no current outlay, I was able to steal a look that I fell for when lusting after yet another cardi.

Now maybe style stealing doesn't appeal to you at all.  Maybe you're lucky enough to have your own unique and gorgeous style and copying some else's is something you've never thought to do.

But if you have, would you like to share a success, or a failure?
And do you have a source you go back to time and time again?
A specific magazine, an actress, a member of a Royal Family?
I'd love you to share your experiences in the comments section below.

Don't forget, you can follow me or subscribe to this blog or Pinterest and now, taadaaahh, you can find me on Instagram.
You'll find the links you need in the right sidebar.

Looking forward to catching up with you again soon,
a la perchoine

  1. I love being inspired by others. I never knowingly copy a look, but why not? It's a form of flattery. In the end, you can put 5 ladies in the same outfit, but they will still all look different! Have a great weekend xx Maria

    1. Oh I love the challenge of a copy, Maria! You're right about the different interpretations, and those variances make blogs all the richer. If you and I ever chance on the same piece, we should do a mother/granny collab! Happy weekend hugs, x.

  2. A gorgeous look Mary. Although you've adapted it to your new life, it still looks glamorous, particularly with the lace cami and touches of silver. You have plenty of va va voom in your retirement, that's for sure.

  3. I am your partner in crime my friend and totally a THIEF! But a proud thief. I'll admit I am just not creative enough so I borrow from others! I love your cardi btw - and you know that one from Target? I returned it, it didn't hang right on my big chested self! I am still on the lookout for one for you my friend!

    1. Thanks for making me feel better about my petty larceny, sista, my partner in crime!
Oh, such a shame that cardi didn't work out but it's good that your big-chested self could see it was a no-no. Thanks for keeping an eye out for me - as you can see from my selection earlier this week, nothing here is as cute as a US cocoon cardi! Happy weekend sista, x.

    1. Hi Jacqui, thanks for your kindness. I bought this cami and the same in khaki about 15 years ago and I'm so glad I did, they come out to play a lot! Happy weekend, x.

  5. I look to Pinterest all the time for inspiration. What usually happens though, is I start trying to copying someone else's look, but for whatever reason, it doesn't work out and I've created my own look. Haha! LOVE this outfit. That cardigan and cami are gorgeous. I've always loved beige and white together too.

    1. Yes, Pinterest is such a source of inspo but it's so good that it leads you to do things in your own individual way. And with such good results, may I add, Amy. I'm not often that confident and use the pics like a rigid painting by numbers! So glad you like beige and white too, it's so classy and you must carry the combo well with your lovely hair colouring. Happy sunny Sunday, x.

  6. I get inspired by Instagram, fellow bloggers in my age group and the way the stores I frequent online style things. Over the years I've learned to take inspiration and tailor the ideas to my budget and body shape rather than copying everything slavishly.

    1. Thank you, Bojanakrienke, a little bit of lace ups the humble cami in an instant.
Hugs and thanks for popping in, my dear, x.

  8. Beige and cream is such a chic combo I think. I always have. It's just plain classy. I get inspo from all around me. I see a lot of ideas on my commute.

    1. Oh Annemarie, it is indeed the simplicity of the classy chic that hits the onlooker with a lightning bolt.
I'm sure your fellow travellers are sneaking inspo steals from you too! Don't be surprised if you board one day and sit with a compartment of Mutton Styled clones!
      Hugs and happy commuting, x.
