About Guernsey - The Cow

The Guernsey Cow

Such a pretty breed.

.

The world-renowned Guernsey cow produces a rich and creamy milk high in butterfat and protein, vitamins A and D, omega 3, and a staggeringly 95% higher content of beta casein 2 than other breeds, which is apparently beneficial to those with diabetes, autism and coronary heart disease.

.

Guernsey cows do not digest the beta carotene from grass which passes through into the milk and this gives the butter an intense yellow colour; beta carotene is believed to give protection from certain cancers.

And as if all that wasn’t enough, it tastes bloomin’ good too!

Because of its dairy attributes, high yields - or simply because of its good looks 😘 - the breed was exported throughout the world in the late 1800s and onwards and many found their way to the agricultural states of the US, where lives my delightful blogger mate Terri.

And this post is dedicated to Terri out in rural Missouri, who I know is a huge fan of the Guernsey breed.

You can find the lovely Terri on her blog, https://meadowtreestyle.com/ and on Instagram, @meadowtreestyle.

She’s an amazing lady and her pages are packed with great style and artiness, and so much more.

I hope you enjoyed my little piece on our local dairy cow which can now be found all over the globe.    Maybe there’s a Guernsey prettying up a field near you!

Hugs, Mary x.

  2. Thank you Mary for a trip down memory lane. I remember learning about the Guernsey and Jersey cows in school in Canada. We had to memorise the percentage of milk fat in each cow's milk! Information that probably didn't stick with me through life! Thanks for the post and lovely photos (and I love the GIN bucket).
