Me and my Hygienist

I am old, I wear green
Keep my teeth nice and clean
See my friend, see the sights, feel alright.

Oh paraphrase, how I've missed you.
So I tweaked the Supergrass classic because, well, I feel alright.

Friday saw me excitedly dressing for my trip to the hygienist.  Well, perhaps "excitedly" is pushing it a bit.  I dressed sensitively for the occasion.  Dressing is a influencer and it's vital that I pitch this one right, for I want mine to like me.
I usually go for something casual, for I don't want her to think I'm trying too hard but I do want to please her, make the experience good for us both.

Me "Quick photo shoot, please."
TP "But you're going to the hygienist!".
Me "Exactly."

So for this visit I chose green.  Green is calming, opined The Photographer.  To calm us both, I added, for I am not the easiest of patients!

Pretty silk scarf which is of many colours and green is one of them, apple green Monsoon jumper (v. old).   And navy cotton, err, not jeans ... slacks maybe?  Oh goodness, I've taken to wearing slacks, how old-lady is that?!  The, err, slacks are another £8 January sales bargain from M&S.

So there was much deliberation over what to wear for the hygienist, and it was ever thus (SEE HERE).  The important thing here is that she liked the green, she liked the scarf.  I confessed that I dress to please her so she'll like me - and  she says that she does!

Dressing for the hygienist aside, and it really is an aside,  oral care is so important.  It affects our health in ways that are a mystery to me.  And here's the thing - my hygienist teaches me how to brush my teeth.  Teaches me, her 68 year old pupil.

Children these days are taught religiously how to keep their teeth nice and clean and their work is monitored daily.  When I was growing up you were given a toothbrush (if you were lucky!) and left to your own devices.  The result is that my hygienist is having to teach this old dog many new tricks.

Each time I see her she shows me a technique, or points me to an area that needs specific attention. And then I go home and work on it and three months later, it's nicely embedded in my cleaning routine.  She is now complementing me on my work.

So, result! I had a pleasant hygienisting experience and I think it was good for her too.  Seems I am keeping my teeth nice and clean.
And I feel alright.

But she and I aren't just about the teeth.

Conversation:
She "Have you seen The Film ?"
Me "Yes"
She "Did you spot that red brick farmhouse?'
Me "Yes"
She "We don't have red brick farmhouses!"
Me "Yes".
She "And what about the accents?  Not one Guernsey accent!"
Me "Oh yes, I've blogged about it".
(By this time she'd removed water sucker and sonic booming instrument so I was able to respond with more than a "yyuerrzth").

And she's not even a Guern and yet she too was irked by that brick and all the other opportunities the film bods missed (See HERE).  It was a seminal moment, a bond was formed by that red brick faux pas.  She's my friend.

Anyway my new bestie liked my choice of green, she liked my oral hygiene work, and the brick farmhouse just about sealed it.

Me and my hygienist,

we're alright.

A la perchoine.

  1. Oh I am chuckling away, you and your hygienist having a good vent session over the film - boy you ladies are good at paying attention to detail. Makes me wonder how many others were bothered and what kind of mail the producers received?! Surely they owe Guernsey an apology or a party to make it up to you. Now we know how to spot a fake Guernsey film!
I think you look lovely in your green jumper and scarf - of course she likes you, who wouldn't? My hygienist talks my ear off the whole time and asks me so many questions. It's almost annoying but Brian and I have been going to her for over 20 years and she keeps up with every detail of our lives.
What a fun post my sweet friend!!! Now I really feel compelled to see the film so I can act like a know it all and tell everyone about the inaccuracies - which of course they'll all wonder how I know!!! Ha!!!

    1. Oh I think we are a Gang of Two so we're not going to shake the film world, but really, did anybody do ANY research?!
Ooh so funny to read of your hygienist experiences but really, it takes time to build up trust and by then you end up knowing so much about each other's lives eh.
My clever friend, you really must see the film with friends then astound them after with your depth of knowledge of the island and its history, over a glass of wine would be nice too. Report back on their reaction!
Have an amazingly wonderful week, hugs, x.

    1. It makes me so happy to imagine you chuckling as you enjoy your morning toast. Oh yes Pieta, best to get everything checked, you don't want to spend your time hunting down a dentist in the Shetlands - I don't think I've seen even one cast member nipping to the mainland for a dentist appointment! Hugs, have a nice day, x.

  7. Too funny Mary. I can see That Film is going to dominate conversation on Guernsey for months to come. I saw a new dentist a couple of weeks ago who performed the mandatory "scale and polish," and I confess that I also thought about what I should wear!

    1. Oh you really do say the loveliest things, Andrea. I don't think I'd fancy all that glow in the dark whitening and bleaching malarkey but otherwise I'm up for some good sonic action! Wear your red top and cute shoes and what hygienist in his/her right mind would be paying attention to your teeth though, you look out-of-this-world amazing in that outfit! Hugs, my blonde beauty, x.

    1. Hi Polly, I think I know what you mean, one particular post, and you are missing nothing. It's me, I'm afraid, sometimes I just don't get it right and I'm so sorry I've confused you. Sometimes I think to myself, what the heck am I doing on a public blog?!!
      Wishing you a wonderful weekend,hugs x.

  11. Apple green. I will remember that that is the trick. HOw about the scarf, did it catch dribble? You look fab in that green our blond Guern bombshell. My orthodontist went to great pains to show me bits I'd missed during my braces change. Anyway I do need to go to the hygenist. I remind myself every morning and then don't make that appointment. There are other things to do at lunch time like read you my dear twin separated by a few years.

    1. Haha, Anna, no dribble on the scarf as I hung it on a coat hook when I went in her chamber, but she saw it with the jumper so it's work was done. Oh I know what you mean, I'm like that with hair appointments, as you probably can tell in my pics! I book my next hygienist appointment when I'm paying the bill and they email a reminder, so that one's easy to administer. But yes, most of the time it's nice to put things off by reading blogs eh?!
      Hugs, my dear twin, x.

    1. Isn't it just, Amy. I wore it previously with white and haven't worn it for a few years so I thought to give it a bit of the Last Chance Salon treatment, starting with navy.
