Park Life

Welcome to another BIG post, peeps.  For I was spoilt for choice on pics of my outing to Sheffield Park, East Sussex.  So you get loads.

I wore a blue stripey top bought recently from Magasin in Copenhagen.  It's linen-ey, it's light and it's long.  I'm loving it!

I teamed it with a long-line white camisole from Next.

And finished the little ensemble off with white Peacock crops and Birkenstocks as there was much walking ahead. I think the look is fresh and comfortable for a day of summery stuff.

So, OOTD done, now allow me introduce you to Sheffield Park and Gardens.
The First Earl of Sheffield bought the house and grounds in 1769 and appointed the renowned gardener Capability Brown to create the gardens, lakes, woodlands and park.

These chestnuts stumps are several hundred years old.  The trees were sadly damaged during The Great Storm of 1987, so were lopped off.

But much good news is found in nature and these chestnuts have started growing again from the base.

There are wonderful walks to enjoy in the park.

The house is not open to the public but the park and gardens are, fortunately - I wasn't trespassing, honest!

BTW, you do realise that I offer myself merely as a yardstick in these photos, an aid to determining the size of plants, trees etc ...

... and not because I think my clumsy, awkward poses add any other value to these shots.  You do get that, don't you?!

I have to own up to being a bit of a sucker for a good gunnera manicata.  What's not to like?

You can see from the trunks that some of these trees were planted hundreds of years ago.

This tree trunk slice has been marked with notable milestones since its birth several hundred years ago, like the reigns of kings and queens and significant events.

Brown made clearings to provide glimpses of the house from the gardens.

The ponds are covered with blooming water lilies.

The base of a giant Redwood.

Brown created clearings to tease the eye with so many beautiful views.

There are reflections to enjoy on the still waters.

Several small waterfalls were created to provide a feast for both eyes and ears.

It takes an army of experienced gardeners and volunteers to maintain the park at such a high standard.

The ducks live a very comfortably life here.

You just have to admire the substance of a well-established gunnera manicata.

These nodules are air supplies for water-embedded plants.

The walk through the park is a eye-feast of shades of green and copper brown.

Big trees abound!

Sculptures have been made from weathered wood.

And every trip to a National Trust property finishes with pop and a sarnie.  Here I'm enjoying a spunky ginger beer with a tasty chicken, bacon and spring onion sandwich.  Yum!

Later I visited my Sussex aunties and some cousins and had a super time chatting away.

I switched my stripey top for this khaki/green loose top from H&M, bought recently in Copenhagen.

It was beautifully cool for the hot late afternoon.

And later still, I slipped in to yet another outfit!  I wore my long print dress seen here, but I took no photos.  However, I can report that it was the perfect dress for early drinks on the terrace with some cousins and their hubbies and for a pretty darned tasty supper later on.  The evening ended with a silly card game (P.I.G., played it?) on the terrace, the air warmed by a nearby chimenea.  The game was so silly that I couldn't quite get the hang of it.  I wanted to apply brain power to it but it would seem to win you have to be, well, just very silly!

Isn't summer just the best?!
What are you doing on these hot sunny days and warm evenings?
Maybe changing outfits a bit more frequently, like me?
Taking a lighter approach to every day life?
Maybe behaving a tinsey winsey bit summer-silly?!

My 18-piece Wardrobe #4

"The Party's over, it's time to call it a day ..."

The Dip

Day 10, Tuesday

Yes, the 18-piece Wardrobe Party is over.  I'd set myself 10 days for the discipline.
Here's what I wore on my last day.

Pink BHS cardi similar here, with M&S black/white  jersey print top and white Peacock crops.  The shoes are from Clarks here, currently a bargain at 50% off.

Clarks shoes, ipso facto - they are so comfy!
Just a heads up on these - the front leather piece cut into my toes in my regular size, so I went up half a size and they are just dandy. Fortunately, Clarks has a extensive range of half sizes and width fittings too.  Good news for us "old" ladies.
At the risk of repeating myself, buying shoes these days is a real Cinderalla affair.

But enough of this old lady stuff, how did this 18-piece drive-through work for me?  Well, I liked having a very neatly arranged selection of clothes to sift through each day.  But I did start to feel a bit samey.  Now that I have test-driven the concept, I will do it again because of that very fact, but with more thought given to my 18 piece selection.  Why not give it a try too?

The Dive

We spent our last evening of the holiday at a traditional inn serving traditional food.

Prawn Cocktail to start, it doesn't get more traditional than that!

Good old British Fish and Chips - I didn't manage to get through even half of this gigantic piece of cod!

But I did help my fellow-diner out with his Belgian waffle affair!

A three course meal with loads of choice was just £10.
It's just a shame there was no pussycat back home that night to surprise with a tasty fish left-over catty-bag!

Day 11, Homeward Bound.

 "I'm sitting at a railway station, got a ticket for my destina-a-tion, oo-oo-oohh ..."

Despite the threat of train disruptions this week, after just a short wait at said railway station, my destination was reached in good time.

In good time, because I allow myself ample time to enjoy this ...

at The Caviar House and Prunier at London Gatwick, here.

What an elegant way to wait for a plane.  It's become a sort of tradition.
A leisurely seafood dish and a fine Sancerre.
A departure screen to keep an eye on the flight.
People to watch, fellow-diners to chat to, crosswords to complete.

So, safely back home. Back to mounds of post to sift through.  Back to grass to mow and hair to cut - both have gone a bit crazy.  And back home to my purring shadow - to say the cat was pleased to see his Mummy would be an understatement, he hasn't left my side for 24 hours!

A Spring in my Step

A sign of Spring

Daffodils budding along the side of the lane.

But the temperature seems to be going in the other direction, it's dropped to around 5-6c, considerably down from the 11-12c we were enjoying just a week or so ago.
Not complaining of course as we get off lightly, living on an island.

I've been a bit lax in outfit postings of late,  Knowing I will have photos taken is a key driver in getting me to smarten up my act, which is the raison d'etre of this little blog.
I may have a long way to go before I put the pout back in this pensioner, but let's keep the momentum going with a few outfit piccies.

Yesterday, day-time.

Next sculpt jeans, Clarks heeled boots (so springy to walk in) similar here,  Woolovers navy long-line jumper, East paisley and beaded, scarf, and a little string of pearls underneath there somewhere.

Then it was party time!
We were invited to celebrate the birthday of the fiancé of a friend.  They are both super-special people and as well as celebrating his birthday with a fab meal and lots of dancing we discovered that we were also celebrating ... their recent wedding!
It was a truly wonderful evening.

Ok, I'm going mostly vintage on you again.  The Peacock fake-leather waterfall jacket is getting another airing, this time with an M&S black lace-necked top, H&M black/red/taupe paisley skirt (both ca. 2004), and Clarks snakeskin nubuck heels, AW15, similar here.

Now, I love these Clarks shoes, they are proving to be truly comfortable but they hadn't yet been put to the ultimate test yet, dancing.  To give you an idea of how comfy these heels really are, get this: I had to be dragged, yes literally dragged off the dancefloor when the taxi arrived because I think I could possibly have danced the night away in these babies, totally pain-free. Amazing shoes.

Thank you, Clarks, for putting
A Spring in my Step.
