Gibraltar

Gibraltar.  The first stop on our cruise after leaving Barcelona.

So what comes to mind?  Well, The Rock itself for starters.

And its cheeky monkey population.

Gibraltar is similar to Guernsey, a crown dependency with its own currency linked to the British Pound.
It's basically a rock at the end of the Spanish mainland and Morocco is a few miles away on the other side of the Straits of Gibraltar.  On a clear day Morocco can be seen - this was not such a day.
Because of its close proximity to Spain its sovereignty has been disputed over the centuries.  A referendum was held some years ago to vote on whether this little country's population wished to remain British or become part of Spain.  The populace voted to remain.

We took a taxi (mini bus) trip up The Rock, as the queue for the cable car up there was over an hour's wait.  And life and cruising are both too short for that kind of queue eh?

The view from the bottom of The Rock, looking out to Spain.

We visited a beautiful cave set in the mountainside.

You can get a better look at the cave's majesty in the little video clip at the end of this post.   It's really quite beautiful.

Then we carried on further up to the mountain.

We stopped at the monkeys' canteen.  The idea is that feeding them daily will stop them harassing visitors for food.
That's the theory.

So when you're standing on a mountain precipice,  looking down on a sheer drop to the sea.

And there's nothing but a shallow edge of rock between you and the beautiful sea hundreds of feet below.

You do NOT want one of these muscly things leaping on your back and forcing you to stumble whilst standing on said precipice.

Which is what happened to TP!

The monkey must have thought he had food in his rucksack.
So much for the clever monkey canteen idea.

Fortunately, the monkey pushed TP so that he stumbled in my direction and not over the edge of the mountain.  And all was well.  But you can imagine the bollocking  the stiff reprimand I gave my mountain goat for standing on that precipice!

Today's Tip:
Conduct a swift risk assessment before positioning yourself at the top of The Rock of Gibraltar!

And here's another view from that near-accident spot.
You can just about see the string of mini-buses weaving their way along the only road, just one vehicle wide and with a sheer drop to the side.  I'm glad I only became aware of how sheer that drop was when I looked at my pics in the safety of my cabin some hours later!

But the views were worth the hairy trip.

Here's the airport runway.

To the north of the runway is Spain.  That's how close.

It was an exhilarating excursion, that's for sure!
We also visited a huge cave complex housing cannon used a few centuries ago to protect this little piece of Britain, but the photos came out too dark to include here.

As we sailed away, we saw that The Rock had been shrouded in cloud all day, which clearly explained why we had been unable to see Morocco from up top.

It looked surreal, like a spaceship had landed on top.  Or The Rock had been clumsily redacted from the view.

And here's my little two minute video summary of my visit.

I'll try to put together little clips with each travel post.
I hope my posts will give you a flavour for the places I visited, and things to avoid - like a precipice in a monkey playground!

I hope you enjoyed your visit to Gibraltar;  join me soon for my next port of interest.

A la perchoine,

Cruise Postcard #6

Hi my merry band of peeps!
I got home yesterday after an enjoyable few weeks in the sun.
I have a trillion holiday shots to make some sense of over the next few weeks. The blog posts that will come out of that will be an analysis of my travel capsule and some travel posts spread over some weeks.

But today I thought I'd pop in to your screens with a bit of reality.  What I wore when touristing.  The daytime stuff.

I'd like to have given you shots of me floating around ancient ruins in a diaphanous gown with my hair flowing in the breeze.
The reality of my sightseeing however is somewhat different.
Me in unflattering  shorts, tethered by layers of lanyards and bags, scragged back hair shoved under a sunhat.  No make up.

Yes, this is a warts-and-all post so prepare yourselves for some pretty ugly blemishes!

I found it best to take shots before I headed ashore for the day.

For this is me, ashore.

The days started sorta tidy ...

... And quickly deteriorated with the addition of bag, necklace, cruise ship lanyard, tour listening device - all hanging around my neck.

Add a cruise ship tote to the mix and the look was definitely messy.

I don't tourist tidily so I usually shy away from posing and posting shots of me out and about.  But today I'm keeping it real.

I packed arch support Reeboks and I'm so pleased I've resurrected these foot saviours, for despite walking many touristing steps in a day, I experienced no foot problems.
So the score was:  Steps 15k+ p.d.   Plantar fasciitis - nada.

And thus my look was relaxed.

Messy relaxed.

But with Happy Holiday Feet.  Thank you, Reeboks.

So, to recap.

A random end of touristing look.

And a bright eyed and bushy tailed start of touristing shot.

Hair decidedly messy.

And usually hidden under a sunhat.

So that's my quickie post peeps.  I'm unpacked and good to go.  Two loads of washing are out on the line, another 2-3 are queued up for today.

Now I'm off to have a farewell breakfast with my amazing cat sitters.  And then some posts will start trickling onto your screens in my post-cruise downtime.

Hugs and a la perchoine,
Mary x.

Cruise Postcard #5

Hiya peeps, just a quick pop in with some more cruise dresses.

LBD

Plain black strappy dress, about 20 years old.

I'm finding this little spiderwebby poncho just perfect for combating the ship's aircon.  Such a useful buy (Nevis) and a useful pack.

The necklace is a jumble sale find from about 25 years ago.

Carmen Miranda

Yes, though I mostly shy away from prints, this knee jerk reaction of a print found me falling in love with this fruity gypsy style dress. (Next Summer sale).   Maybe it's the abundance of fruit that gets me feeling like Carmen Miranda in it, and as for prints, aye aye aye aye, I like this one very much!
And so does TP, strangely.  It's one of those dresses that down on paper we shouldn't like, but IT we both do.

Toile De Jouy

You've seen this lovely Primark sundress many times here this summer.  And of course it was the first thing to leap into my suitcase!

Cocktails

Loving them.   I'm working my way through the menu (here, Cherry Blossom Garden).
How am I going to wean myself off these back home?

A la perchoine,
Mary x.

Coming up - Gibraltar and the flying monkey!

Cruise Postcard #4

Smart-casual dinner.

Next black gingham/embroidered dress, casual metallic sandals.

I’ve picked up a few lovely summer dresses in the Next sale.   I’m abruptly moving from knee to midi length due to OAP leg issues - you might say it's a bit of a knee-jerk reaction (see what I did there?!).  Serendipitously, I’ve found a few #retirementdressing beauts in the sale.  This one is a light cotton, perfect for cruise temps.  It’s like wearing in-built air conditioning!

Food on-board - Breakfast this morning.

I'm mega impressed with the food on-board.  I imagined it would be cold rubbery buffet food.  WRONG.  The buffet breakfast food is freshly prepped and cooked (some to order) and nourishing.  The dining room food is out of this world and in just the right portion sizes to allow me to taste three courses yet still feel comfortable leaving the table.

We’re happily grazing on fresh fruit and vegetables.  And what's the best?
We're eating BETTER than we eat at home!!!I

Off for a swim now.  See ya!

A la perchoine,
Mary x.

P.s.  I suspect using data may result in me being whacked by my service provider on return so I may now resort to just posting on Instagram and then resume my daily diary back home.  So why don’t you follow me on @thepoutingpensioner?!!

Cruise Postcard #3

A blue/grey striped dress allowed me to blend in with my surroundings last night.
It looks maxi but is midi IRL.

Not a care in the world ... or maybe just one - clutch or crossbody?

Oh and maybe one other - how to resist all this amazing food?!

An awesome pea soup.

An Asian prawn dish.

And some fantasmagorical triple choc indulgence.

Yup, it’s a hard life, but someone’s got to do it eh?!

A la perchoine,
Mary x.
