The Puffin and Oyster

 Hello my lovelies.

Yup, it’s that jumpsuit again!
Are you tiring if it yet?

But there’s a reason you’re seeing it here yet again.
It’s because of where I took it!

I took it to a new restaurant on the island.
We left the house so I guess this can be called a Date Night.
Why don’t you join us?
But don’t worry, we’re not teenagers so you won’t feel like a gooseberry!

So there’s a new restaurant on the island.
And what was the first thing that struck me?

A fire extinguisher!!

Not literally.
No Pout was injured in the partaking of this date night.

But yup, I was immediately impressed by how they’d taken an obligatory health and safety item, a fire extinguisher, and made it into a design feature!  This copper extinguisher is a thing of beauty, and I never thought I’d find myself saying that!

Shall we move on in?

The Puffin and Oyster is its name.
Pub and Dining is its claim.

Let’s check it out.

This is a long-established beachside restaurant (previously The Hoummet Tavern) that has had a recent makeover.  In fact, a makeover by stealth!

Through The Covid Years it had seemingly laid closed, dormant and discarded and seemed like it would never open its doors again as a restaurant.  Each time I walked or drove along here along Le Hoummet,
there it was, dead as a dormouse, and as it’s a coastal location I’ve gone passed pretty often
 these past three years.

Then I go on holiday for two weeks and come back to this!!

How they managed to make these changes without any external sign of activity or work vehicles parked outside, well it beats me!

As well as the amaze balls extinguisher, I was impressed with the decor everywhere I looked.
And believe me, I LOOKED!

So impressed was I from my looking that it appears I abandoned TP (bottom left) to find his own entertainment as I went a-photographering!

The structure hasn’t changed, the place hasn’t been extended, yet they’ve managed to create additional dining areas seemingly out of thin air!

Note to self: check if the designer can work the same magic with Chez Pout!

The reception and bar area.

More dining.
But where’s the pub?

And then this area totally flummoxed me.
How did they create yet another dining area without extending, I asked myself?
Then I twigged, I was standing in the old public bar!
Could this be cruelly the “pub” in “pub and dining”?

I say cruelly as it looks nothing like it used to.  Nothing like a pub.
So I did stop to mourn the loss of yet another island pub.
The old pub was so popular with locals within walking/cycling reach, and as a coastal bus pub crawl destination, and its Friday night meat and seafood draws were legendary.
The pub’s patrons would have provided all year round income to support the restaurant side in winter months, so it will be interesting to see if that loss of income will have an affect on the restaurant’s coffers over time.

But let’s move on.

Because I guess there is a drinking only area
in the far right of this picture.  It’s not exactly pubby per se but I guess this must be the “pub” bit of wot it says on the welcome mat.

But fortunately the view is unchanged!

They’ve maxed out in the outside dining space too.

So both inside and outside patrons can soak
in this view as they soak in their wine or pint.

Now on to the food, for a restaurant can’t be judged on decor and view alone eh?!

TP is looking happy so let’s check out what he ate.

A fabulous lobster pizza.
Who would have thought to put those two together?

But it worked, I’m told.
It came highly recommended and it didn’t disappoint.

Now I feel a restaurant should be judged by its chips, for I don’t eat them at home so I treat myself when out and I don’t want them to be mediocrely meh.

And these weren’t.  Light and with a flavoured crispy coating.  We ate them all, which amazed us as between us we don’t usually get passed half way in the shared pot.

My only criticism of the restaurant would be the mayo.  Served in a sachet 😱.
However it is no doubt a health and safety choice and these Stokes sachets provided a more decent serving of mayo than the paucity of offering in the ubiquitous Heinz pack.
So on second thoughts, I’ll let that one go.

Oh and me, what did I eat?

A roasted peach caprese salad with a side
helping of Guernsey crab.
It was BIG.

Again, I’m going to give them the benefit of the doubt here as the peach didn’t taste or look roasted in any way, but I’m telling myself that all the roast flavour was in the discarded skin.
Still, it would have been nicer to skin the peaches first in boiled water then roast them without their clothes on.  IMHO.
I just may suggest that to them next time, for there definitely will be a next time.

Now let’s see how these plates fared.

No surprise, some pizza went home in a doggy bag as it was a much larger pizza than TP would normally order (and there is no sizing option).  Never mind, TP said it was delicious cold the next day.

And mine?

Well, it may have been BIG but this is what’s left of my salad.  It seemed embarrassing to ask to take home two pieces of mozzarella and a scrap of salad!

So, nice meal, nice service. nice decor, nice view.
Puffin and Oyster, nice.
Alright, let’s upgrade that to LOVELY!

And just in case you are getting jumpsuit withdrawal symptoms …

… here’s another peak!

As we sat near an open window, I wore the cardi at the start of the meal until the place started filling and got warmer.

The cardi has rust coloured embroidered flowers and edge stitching (echoing the base colour of the Primark jumpsuit) and is very pretty; it’s an old fave as it has stuck around for 22 years and is from Principles.

And I chose a complementary coloured wine!
Pinot Grigio Rust Blush.  It’s The Pout’s S22 drink of choice.

Now let’s hear what TP has to say about his meal in this two minute video.

First Supper

Hello my lovelies!

How’s your weekend been?
It’s been glorious here and I’ve been busy in the garden, mostly watering, deheading and repotting.
During the past couple of weeks I’ve completed a few indoor projects too, as some days have not been the best weather wise.

Along the way, maybe as reward for my hard work at home, I was treated out for our first meal in a proper restaurant, my first I four months, so let’s relax today with a bit of food porn.

A glass of wine tastes so different when out, don’t you think, and that experience is enhanced when looking out on a nice view eh?
You can’t see it in this pic, but the window looks out on the sea.

Here’s what we ate.

A three cheese soufflé starter with delicate yet intense flavour.

Turbot with clams served with a cream sauce, served with new potatoes.

Crab salad first course, served with a kohl rabi coleslaw.

Tender chicken served on an Asian salad, such fresh flavours.

I like to recreate dishes at home from restaurant inspiration, rather like a Pinterest style steal but with food.
We’ve since made a Dover sole cooked in a similar cream sauce but without the clams, I don’t think they were necessary. I wouldn’t ordinarily make a cream sauce with fish as I think it stands up perfectly on its own, but this was a nice variation and one that I
I’d choose/make again.
I’d like to recreate the chicken with Asian salad too but will have to work on getting those delicate yet pokey flavors just right and that could take a few go’s.

We always taste each others food to max out on the eating experience.  Do you when eating out?

And throughout the meal we were able to enjoy a fine display of kite surfing right outside our window.  Here our surfer is just a flash of red sail next to a potted plant.

And here’s what I chose to wear for this pretty special
First Supper,

a simple and comfortable linen maxi, featured IN THIS POST HERE.

So, is there anything here you’d like to try making at home?
And dare I ask, have you been out-out yet?

A la perchoine,
Mary x.

Tuesday Travel - Imperial at Pleinmont

I continue to travel my doorstep.  No airport delays, no currency exchange risk, no packing panic, none of that.  Just choose a location,  decide what to wear, point the car in the general direction and go!

So some weeks ago I did just that.  It was a lovely evening so the choice was easy - the Imperial at Pleinmont.  The drive along the west coast on an evening like this is spectacular, and it certainly feels like I'm on holiday as soon as I feel the wind through my hair, as I drive along the red granite coastline in my new open-top.
Yes, this was out first evening out in our convertible so I just had to max out on the experience by choosing the furtherest possible destination from my house!

What to wear was easy too.  Ultra violet.  Dress from Madeleine, cardi from M&S.

And we did our point and go and headed down to the island's furthest south-westerly destination, Pleinmont.

But who needs a cardi on an evening like this?

We were greeted by the friendly duo made up of A and J.

The view from our table was just perfect.

We ate early so the restaurant indoors was quiet.

Dunno why I do these selfies, but it just feels right.

My nails were shellac'ed in a summery pink with a glitter overlay.
My nailist told me they said "take me out".
I told The Photographer the story, whose take was that she and I had cooked up a cunning ploy to get me wined and dined.
I then used any and every opportunity to flash my glitter nails in front of The Photographer.  "What do these nails say to you?" I asked on repeat. "Collusion" was his answer, also on repeat.

What it took for him to actually take me out was a flashy new car!

I had a delicious crab salad.  It was huge!

TO had a yummy seafood fritto misto.  I, er, 'helped' him with the chunky chips!

We later went out on the deck, from where this beautiful view can be s I asked in - as a sip or two of chilled white is soaked in.

The outside eating area is dog-friendly.

The Imperial - lovely food, lovely staff, lovely location.
If you're an islander or an island visitor, A and J and the team are waiting to give you a pleasant experience out Pleinmont way.

And then, because we dine early, we could enjoy the drive and the views all the way back home again.
Here, Fort Grey, known locally as 'the cup and saucer', for that is what it looks like.

Le Gouffre

The Event

Dinner with friends.
On a Saturday evening in June.

What to wear?!!!

The Outfit

The Weather

On this day, I was hoping for sun.  I got mist.

The Dress - Next

But that didn't deter me.  I was going to wear this sunny dress!
The pattern makes me smile.  Each and every time I wear it.
Do you have a pattern that has that effect on you?

The Cardi - M&S

I'd been reunited with my yellow cardi that very morning, and, well, it felt rude not to.  Even TP was fighting this dress's corner when it came to that dreaded part of the going out process ... The Outfit Choice!

The Shoes - Adesso

I usually wear flatties with this dress.  Wearing heels really took the dress up a notch, bringing it to Evening Restaurant standard, IMHO.
Have you found a simple switch of footwear changes the mood if an outfit?

I picked out the taupe in the pattern to follow through to the shoes.  Yeah, I know, a little crazy for your Pout.  Yellow floral and taupe indeed!  But in our dotage we ladies are given permission to go a little crazy.  It's a rule.  I think.  Maybe it's written in The Pensioner Handbook.  Or maybe I have to write one first.  Dunno.  I'm a bit befuddled.  But that's ok, befuddled is there in the Handbook too.

And of course,

The Food

I had crab and lobster risotto.  It was tasty, but huge and it was very rich, so of course I couldn't finish it.  I had imagined a little mound of it when I ordered.  And a little drier.  Perhaps this is a risotto, Portuguese-style, for the owners are Portuguese.

TP has a lobster thermidor and he was most happy with his lot.  We're talking empty salad bowl and scooped-out shells.

The Location Shot

Now, I planned to take outdoor shots of the outfit against the superb scenery surrounding this cliff-top restaurant.  I hadn't reckoned on the sea mist, which actually had temporarily mislaid the stunning views.  So as we drove down the misty road to the restaurant, being fleet of foot I changed my plan to do some car park outfit shots, for we were after all a little early for the reservation.

We arrived at the car park at exactly the same time as our friends.  Rats!   To jump out of the car and start posing felt too embarrassing and slightly weird.  So I didn't.  Instead I leave you with a shot I found on the internet.   I call that my Disaster Recovery Plan.
