Hello dear readers. How's autumn looking through your window? Crisp and bright? Or gloomy and grey? Well, we're having a bit of the latter today. So as I sit in my garret, I look out the window and see grey. I look at my last post and see grey.
And I just can't put you through any more grey right now. Perhaps too much grey is not good for the soul.
I packed a very sombre capsule for this 3 week trip. There came a point where I just couldn't handle any more sombre. So I nipped into Next and found me something bright, cheerful and cheap.
A very simple jumper. No statement sleeves, no graduating hemline, just a jumper that delivers pinky coral cheer on a gloomy autumn evening.
I've tried to find you a link to it just in the remotest of chances that you may be interested, but I can't find the exact jumper which has nice soft raglan-ish sleeves, so here is something similar.
Of course, I didn't put the single solitary one jumper over my arm. Others came home with me too. They mostly went back,
but only after I'd done the girls' world try-on with mirror-selfies.
I do like coral and black generally, and with a nice piece of jewellery to link in the black (like this piece from Morocco).
I reflected. Trinni and Suzanne (What Not To Wear) would have frowned on my teaming this colour with black. I think their view is that black cheapens colour.
But nah, like Catherine of Not Dressed As Lamb and most women who get to a certain age, I will wear what I like.
So why not wear a beret?
The evening was dank with rain and I was going out to dinner, so why not indeed a beret to keep the pancake-dank top of head look at bay? Sometimes a hat really is called for and this one did its job well.
Yup, I will wear what I like and what I liked last night was Left Bank Parisienne!
I added my embroidered black scarf from Primani and my old M&S trenchcoat that I keep over here. Now Janice of The Vivienne Files made several observations whilst people watching on the streets of Paris recently. One was that the chic Parisiennes are mostly wearing grey jeans, which is fine by me as I love grey jeans and so I find myself on-trend in the jeans department. Another observation was that there was not a whiff of trenchcoat in the air. But no matter, 1 out of 2 ain't bad.
So I wore Left Bank, just not AW17 Left Bank, but I think it made a neat little outfit to meet up with cousins and their husbands.
Now ladies, I'm interested to know: Do you take heed of the advice of Trinni and Suzanne, avoiding black with bright colours? Or do you wear what feels right, what you think suits you?
You have probably realised by now that I am definitely in the second group!
We went to a nice Italian restaurant in the town (there are so many!). It has an extensive menu which is always a relief if you are out with a group, as the chances are there will be something for everyone.
And just because I have them, here are the food shots. Dieters and those ambivalent to food can just scroll down to the comments section ... and leave me one, please!
A crab and mango starter, which TP and I shared but which he had started demolishing before I could say "smile" to the dish. It was prettier than this. And it was light, fruity and tasty.
We shared zucchini fritti of course. The Italians have really got this dish sussed, nobody does it better.
TP had an amazing lemon sole. When I saw it I had dining-partner's-envy, wish I'd ordered it.
I'd ordered a tuna pizza as when I spotted it on the menu, I remembered that in my 20/30s I used to make this a lot after my Mum sent me an absolutely winning recipe. I have to say that it didn't match mine on texture or taste, although it was fine. Mine was made with a thicker base which manned-up to the moist tuna. Mine also included blanched green pepper slices. So overall, it got me yearning for that recipe of Mum's that I walked away from years ago.
Never mind, you know, this winter I'm going to have a crack at recreating it - and I'll post it. Please give me a nudge if I forget this little pinky promise, eh?
So there you have it, darlings, a pinky coral top and a pinky promise, both guaranteed to lift the gloom of late autumn!
A la perchoine.
Love that color on you! Oh my, that food....yummy!!!
ReplyDeleteRenee in Northern California
Thanks so much, Renee, so sweet of you. Sorry to have spoilt your appetite for supper! Hugs, x.
DeleteWhat a lovely coral top; the colour really suits you. My favourite is the one of you wearing the baret and trenchcoat. Parisien fashion or not, I think it looks very chichi. A little bit of French France in B-o-S.
ReplyDeleteHi LD, thanks so much, you are so sweet. I think you've liked that trenchcoat in the past too (see, I remember these things, I just don't remember what day it is!). Hugs from you chichi friend, x.
DeleteLady Leoprint I can't tell what I look forward to most in your posts; the clothes or the food! Yum!
ReplyDeleteOkay, Trinny and Susannah are my idols but yes, we need to wear what we like! Amen, sista! Black is lovely with pinkish coral! The beret is fabulous on you too.
What a fun and bright look. You don't disappoint, Lady Leoprint!
xo,
Kellyann
I expect eating vicariously doesn't pile on the calories. Unfortunately, I'm the one taking one for the team and eating them!
DeleteI remember few things from their prog, but the cheapening of black was one. putting a wide belt with EVERYTHING is another, and of course their trademark - hoist up your bra straps!
Thanks for your sweet words, Mrs R. Hugs, Lady Leoprint, x.
Love the color on you. And I think it looks good with black, especially in cooler weather. And the beret! And the trench coat! Never heard of the grey jeans thing, but then again, I don't get to Paris much. HAHA Maybe I need to go shopping.
ReplyDeleteWell, thank you so much, Susan. I picked up the grey thing from Janice; I haven't been to Paris in 30 years and it's pretty much on my doorstep. What a waste!
DeleteHope your weekend is getting off to a flying start, hugs. x.
I love this colour on you Mary, and that food looks delish. Thanks for sharing - have a super end of week/weekend. x Jacqui

Thanks so much, Jacqui. Here's wishing you a super bloggers' weekend = love to the girls!
DeleteHugs, x.
I love you in coral and the jumper and trench coat are fab on you. The beret gives you a very jaunty air...I love berets and have a small collection.
ReplyDeleteI find your pictures very small and sometimes difficult to see properly - and that's with my specs on! Have you thought about enlarging them?
xxx
Why thank you, sweet Vronni. I'm going to look out for your berets because I find them quite a challenge to place on my head at just the right angle.
DeleteNow, my pictures. I'm short-sighted and don't need specs for reading, so I'm feeling my way through what you must be experiencing. Have you tried englarging them with that on-screen finger spreading technique? I usually post using the medium setting and occasionally smaller is they are merely associated pics, like the two try-on pics on this post. So I've played around and made one XL and one L. How does that work for you? I have to say that seeing myself XL on screen is quite scary!
Hugs and hope you're weekend is going perkily along, x.
I like the first biggest picture the best!
DeleteI don't take any notice of anyone, it has to be my own choices Mary. I know I can be a bit boring and monochromatic but hey that's the way I like it. I love this colour on you and the Mac in a similar shade brings you to life. I hope you have it at home with you. I remember you wore something in this type of colour in the summer and I love that too. It's just so your colour xx
ReplyDeleteOh no, only now do I read this, back home and estranged from my mac! I'll have to fix that. I did bring the biker home per another reader's recent helpful suggestion.
DeleteThank you for your kind words regarding colour; I will have to work that summer coral fluted top into an autumn outfit.
Now, lovely lady, you are so stylish and inject lots of lovely colour. I find your style and elegance exciting and inspirational. And I happen to adore monochrome on you and others, I even like my recent top to toe greyness!!
Hope you are having the weekend you long for after your hectic week last week, hugs, x.
Thanks for linking up to Top of the World Style. You look great in coral. The necklace is stunning!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Nicole, so sweet of you. I'm proud of the necklace which I made out of a hanging charm. Hugs and have a happy weekend, keep warm up there! x.
DeleteI think the coral is lovely on you, and I particularly like the way you've tied everything together in the outfit with the black scarf, black beret and coral trench coat - it's very stylish and you wear it with confidence. I too remember Trinny and Susannah talking about not wearing black with colour - I particularly remember them saying don't wear it with turquoise, a favourite colour of mine - and I hear their words whenever I reach for something turquoise from my wardrobe. They had a lot of influence on a lot of us in terms of style, didn't they. You look great in your coral-black combo.
ReplyDeleteOh Jacqui, what a sweet thing to say. Thank you!
DeleteFunny how we remember these things, eH? I find myself hoisting up my own bra straps occasionally and think of them! Do you wear your turquoise with black? I'm sure you look lovely in that; I love the combo and have worn it on this blog quite a few times.
Thanks for popping in, speak again soon. Hugs for a happy weekend, x.
It's been very grey here too! This bright color brightens my day! Good choice. My, that pizza looks delicious!
ReplyDeleteHi Amy,
DeleteI do think dull days sometimes call for remedial, knee jerk reactions to kick start the day. However, I did get rather carried away on my grey pumpkin monochrome day recently!
Thank you for your sweet words ... fancy sharing the pizza?!!! Hugs and have a super weekend, x.
Love the coral and super trench and goodness the well dressed Guernsey lady is wearing a trench. The Parisians are clearly behind. I'm jealous of the coat. I wear coral a fair bit too and with black or grey, or denim.
ReplyDeleteOh thanks Anna and this Guernsey lady is flattered by your compliments! Hugs, x
