Shirts on Larger Ladies Formula

 Hello my lovelies!

Shirts.  On women.  Plump women!

I’ve been in training with shirts this summer.
Over the years I felt that I looked too matronly in shirts, a bit sergeant majorish in them.  Top half issues.
So 2022 is designated as my last ditch attempt to see if I can get them to work for me.

I think the trickery may be in the fabric, both the texture and the colour.

Finding the right formula to allow larger busted ladies to look good in the masculine shirt shape can be a challenge, but I think I’ve found a winning formula!

Taadaah, I give you …

The Pout’s Formula for Shirts on Larger Ladies

1. Shirts in finer fabrics drape well and look less matronly

A fine slinky fabric or a cotton lawn drapes well over the larger torso, as seen with this lawn shirt from @marksandspencer.

2.  Then chose a pretty feminine colour or print to negate any hint of masculinity that a shirt brings to the female form.
Like pink.

And that’s it.   Simples.

Yup, I think I’ve sussed this shirt wearing malarkey!

And finally I’m wearing my 👚 shirt with pride!

Other shirts I have been in training with

Light lawn jade oversized shirt. (Me, messy; him, elegant!)

Striped (and embroidered) loose shirt - I’ve worn this many times this summer.

Brown linen on a windy day

And of course, the classic white linen fitted shirt worn in many combos, but here worn with light wash blue jeans.

Do YOU wear shirts?
Do you find their masculine shape a challenge?
I’d love to hear how shirts work, or don’t work, for you in the comments below.

A la perchoine,
Mary xxx.

  1. These are lovely shirts on you - the striped one is my favourite! I don't wear a lot of shirts, I just hate ironing them. Luckily hubby hates ironing too so we came to an agreement I'd do my ironing and he would do his so I don't have to iron his work shirts, haha! I do wear a lot of dresses and soft tees that don't need ironing too ;)

Hope you are having a good start to your week!

    1. Oh Mica you are a girl after my own heart. That’s what put me off shirts when I was working! I always wore model vests and long sleeved tees under my jackets. So yes, ironing these shirts is daunting.

    1. Thanks Lovely, I’m really trying to get myself into the whole white shirt thing. I’ve even packed one for my upcoming hols!

  3. My biggest challenge with front button shirts is the gaping. As a rule, I carefully pin all my front-buttons tops/dresses with a safety pin, which essential turns them into pullovers but the look is there.

    1. Oh Rena, so funny! But how laborious to pin each button. I expect a larger size looks too big on the shoulders.

  4. I don't have many button-down shirts with collars -- not sure why. I think I have more knit tops than shirts. You make a good point about how the softer, more flow-y fabrics drape softly and create a more attractive shape. You look fabulous in that pink color! 1. Hi Carol, I was more on the knits and jersey tops too but I thought I’d give shirts one last chance.

  5. I love The Pout's formula! I used to love cotton shirts with quirky designs but they did me no favours whatsoever, and felt uncomfortable to wear. I find softer fabrics much easier (and sizing up to avoid gaping between buttons, or better still, covered placket). Thanks for linking! x

  6. Oh, I love all of these on you! I really have a hard time with button down shirts and really don't wear them but I think you are right: the fabric and how it drapes can make all of the difference as well as the length! I finally did find a chambray button down I like and the trick was the length and slits on the side for me.

  7. You've nailed it!

I think a slightly fitted shirt works best of all.
