What A Pout Wants

The Backstory

Year 2000.  The film What Women Want is released.  The Pout watches it.  Falls for Helen Hunt's wardrobe, especially her beige suede skirt.  The Pout searches one out.  The Pout gets what she wants.  She's loves it, wears it to death then tires of it, packs it away like the loved teddybear of a fickle owner.
And so the skirt sleeps.  And sleeps.

Year 2018.  The Pout stumbles upon her old skirt.  Puts it in the washing machine.  And awakens her sleeping beauty.

Channelling Helen Hunt

Yes, I've done my forensics and worked out why I bought the skirt and how I got to fall in love with it all over again.

So here's what I've been doing with my laundered suede.

Wearing head to toe soft-tone neutrals.
A simple soft cashmere jumper.  The simple soft suede skirt.

And early one morning and wearing my washed suede skirt in an osteopath's waiting room I realised I was channelling Helen Hunt.  But in an old lady, pensioner way.  I wore a scarf.  Don't think Helen did scarves but older ladies do that, add scarves to everything.

So having had that HH moment, I did my research and discovered that the film's release date fitted in with when I bought the skirt.

I googled some images and up popped the gorgeous Helen.

Wearing cashmere and suede, both hugging her super gorgeously toned body.

Elegant simplicity.
I googled some more.  She mostly wore Celine in the film.   Michael Kors was designing there back then.  That's just an aside.

My forensics showed that my HH passion ran deep.

Around that time I also bought a black dress very similar to the goddess's.  It's Marina Rinaldi and worn recently here, styled with berry boots.  That's all this classic dress needs.

And this look doesn't date either.

I'm still wearing  HH's cream cardi/white cami/updo look.

But not the stinkin' high heels.  The other Helen goddess (Miren) calls these her stripper heels, her heels of preference for the red carpet.  That's just an aside too.

HH in pale blue Celine.

The Pout in aqua East.

Yes, around the same time I bought this linen dress and jacket.
This sleeping beauty was awoken too last year.

As well as noting the huge subliminal influence HH must have had on my style back then, what's also getting through to me from this little exercise is that if you get the right classics, they do not date.

I recalled that as well as HH's amazing wardrobe, the film had been an enjoyable watch too - no surprise as it was a Nancy Myers film.  I think many many MANY of my all time favourite films are hers.  But I searched my DVD stash and found a gap in my library.

No WWW in there.  A quick visit to Amazon remedied that p.d.q. And yes, it's still as good today as it was BITD.  A film classic.

Here's a snippet for you.

HH's Influence Lives On

Since  I found and washed this little skirt, I've  worn it in many guises.  I've experienced my Suede Skirt Spring, but in autumn/winter.  So I leave you with a few of the outfits the skirt has sprung up in through the season.

So that was my Suede Skirt journey.
I got what I wanted and have found the love for it again.
And I've discovered that Ms Hunt has been so much more than just a skirt to me.
Has any film character influenced you like this?  Perhaps without you realising it? That's something for you to reflect on this cold and wet January!

A la perchoine,
Mary x.

  1. I remember HH in the blue Celine dress in WWW - it really stood out for me. I recently rewatched WWW on the telly - it has stood the test of time. HH is really a natural - I enjoy most films she is in. Your outfits are super stylish once again. Not sure that I have been influenced by an actresses, but going to give this some thought. Great post! Lise

    1. Thanks for popping in Lise, and with your sweet comments, for which I am always grateful. Isn't HH good, like in As Good As It Gets? So pleased to hear that you remembered the blue dress too. Sometimes the influence is subliminal, as I only realised recently that my wardrobe purchases were in the spirit of WWW for many years after. It's a bit of fun eh?
      Hugs and good weekend, x.

  2. Hello Pout,
I am a fan of HH from her Mad About You days, on to Twister, and then WWW. I even thought I could recreate her hair-to no avail, sigh! I think that one actress who influenced me was Ingrid Bergman as I was often told I look like her-but that was a ways back now, perhaps my ageing face has changed!! Shocking thought!! I do tend to wear mostly classic pieces but would love to try some of the 1940's shoes and dresses straight out of Casablanca! Quick question for you-does wearing classic styles make me blend in or stand out? Just curious as you have so much style knowledge to share! Thanks for another fun post and Happy 2019 a bit late.

    1. Hi Jules and welcome to 2019, it's great to hear from you. So pleased you're an HH fan and lucky you, looking like a Swedish film star (maybe your Danish blood coming through?). I love the 40s style - check out my Insta today as I think it's possible to take 40s elements into a teensies outfit. Oh go on, give the 40s look a go!!! And share how it went?
I giggled at the style knowledge but but I'm happy to share my humble view, that being that when I see stylishly classic women I see exactly that, her, and not the clothes. The more on-trend the outfit, the more it's the outfit that gets the attention. Wear classics with style and confidence is my view, but with caution as there's a fine line between classic and frumpy! Go forth and shine Jules, like the Scandi film star you are!
Hugs my dear, let's catch up again soon, x.

  3. Hi Mary, love your suede skirt in all the guises! Very stylish and neutrals also suit you wonderfully. Had to laugh at your mention of older ladies having to add a scarf! My DH always comments that they spoil an outfit but I have so many I want to wear! Frankly I think he is right and the scarf makes me look 'muttonish'. However you look very stylish in all your pics.

    1. Hi Lin, thanks for your sweet words. I did laugh hearing of the dialogue between you and DH, reminds me of with mine with TP about belts! I admit I'm drawn to scarves more as I age, but it might be because I rarely wear pattern so use scarves for a quick injection of print and colour. Perhaps that's what you're finding yourself doing too? Any let's forget the mutton and enjoy the mufflers! Hugs my dear, x.

  5. Oh, my, Helen Hunt fan...so was I many moons ago. My favourite actress in the 90s, especially in As Good as it Gets but any movie with HH was good of course ":o). Can't say that I have ever had an active interest in what the actresses/actors wore but you're doing a pretty good job of 'reliving those HH moments', PP! My favourite outfit this time is the cashmere jumper/skirt combo (oh, and HH fabulous cream dress with slingbacks!). Scarf or necklace? For me chunky pearls!

    1. Well we didn't know that about each other and yes, As Good As It Gets was a superb film for HH. So pleased you like the jumper and skirt, it feels classily casual. And goodie, I'm wearing chunky pearls in another of my HH outfits! And a big yes to those stripper heels and I'm sure you wouldn't totter around in them like I would!
      Hugs my dear friend, x.

  8. Mary, this was a great post. I love HH and also that suede skirt of yours. I remember HH back in the day, such a natural beauty. You have created some fantastic looks that suit you perfectly and the lesson is not lost on me - buy good stuff, classics that will last. Not many of can wear something from 18 years ago - boy my mid section is much larger than it was back then. But you, my stylish sista make the old look brand spankin new with all of your fantastic pieces! You wear those classic, tailored shapes so well!
    Hugs!!

    1. Why thank you so much, sista, and isn't HH a classy lady? I had no idea she'd influenced me quite so much until I started putting this post together. I have the advantage over you, my friend, as 18 years ago my midriff had already strayed in every direction!!! So maybe investment dressing when you hit 50 is the way to go. And I think you may have hit the nail on the head, old looking spanking new again is perhaps what makes those classic shapes classic.
Hope your weekend has been a lot more fun than mine. Hugs my sizzlin sista, x.

    1. Hi Jacqui, the weird thing is I didn't realise I'd been attempting to copy HH all those years ago and right up to today!
Thanks, the black dress was reduced to around £100 (in 2002!) and its original ticket price was about twice that (yes, I shocked myself!) but I wore it sooo much when working and it's still holding its shape well all these years on. So a pricey but solid investment piece, you could say!
      Hugs, x.

  10. What a lovely skirt and what great outfits you have made with it. I like all of them but my favourite is when you pair it with a dark top and a scarf. How nice you rediscovered it.

As for the camisole under a top look; I remember seeing a psychologist at my training hospital wearing this look - with jeans in 1972, and have loved it ever since!

Hope your week is going well.

    1. Thanks so much sweet Vronni, it’s turned out to be a really versatile skirt again.
Oh thanks for sharing your 1972 memory, there are indeed some outfits which are pivotal, and not just those worn by actresses but IRL. I’m so pleased it’s not just me who sees a look and remembers it forever. And sometimes we don’t start copying the look immediately, but it’s stored up there for when we need it. I’m going to start checking out your blog for this look from now on!!! Hugs my lovely, x.

  13. You washed your suede skirt in the washing machine? Did you line dry it? I think my mind took a step back when I read this. What does it do to the leather? I love all that you have done with it, but washing it sort of blew me away.

And Helen Hunt. I Wikipedia-ed her. Surprise! I watched Cast Away with the grandson over Christmas and didn't even know the actress but I do seem to be in the minority on that one ;-).

Have a wonderful start to 2019. XOXO TERRI

    1. Thanks kindly, and yes ma'am, I washed my suede! I found four suede skirts and one suede waistcoat when searching out an old item of clothing last year. They were old and I had nothing to lose so I bunged then all in the washing machine on 30c, short cycle I think, then hung them out on the line. All suede came out as soft as it was before. It worked for me, it may not work for everyone.

Oh Terri, I love that you did your research on Helen! She seems to have quite a fan club in this comments section.

Hope 2019 is going well for you so far, Hugs x.
