The Green Room

 Dear reader,

Apologies for my being a few days late in posting. I’m finding myself still wiped out and with cold symptoms after my first Covid stint a few weeks ago.

So rather than showing you photos of my bleary eyed self, I thought you might want to have a look at a recent project of mine.

Welcome to Le Loovre!

I recently gave my downstairs guest loo a makeover.

It sorely needed it!

In the first picture above, you see the state of the bathroom before I got loose on it. Beige. Meh. No soul.

It was room I pretty much turned a blind eye to for a decade because to be honest I couldn’t think of what to do with the space.  Everything was a cream colour.  The walls were cream.  The floor was a sort of ivory cream. The shower was similar, but had a mosaic trim in various shades of brown, and it was that which had blinded me and had in the past stunted any inspiration I had for this room. So I did nothing.

Then suddenly the stars were aligned, and I had an idea for the room! It shall be green!

And so it was!

Quickly the idea became a plan, then the plan a reality.
Walls woodwork and ceiling were painted in a sultry dark green. It’s called Calke Green and it’s from Farrow and Ball.

Once the room had been painted, I set to dealing with the very unsatisfactory window arrangement.

Previously the room had Roman blinds in a neutral color on both the window and the glazed door. It was not satisfactory; the blind flopped anround each time the door was accessed, and strings flapped as they do with Roman blinds.

Amazingly, I found something called privacy film. I then found that you could get it in various styles patterns and colours. I was like a child in a sweetie job!

Eventually, I settled on this green based stained glass effect film, which matched my vision for the room, more on that later.

I housed all the cleaning materials in a coordinating tote bag hanging behind the door.

The bathroom had no wall space to fit a toilet roll holder, so I came up with the idea of putting a toilet roll inside a brown weave cube from a unit that previously sat on the floor in the room. You can see that just at the side of the loo in the pic below.

I hung the rest of the unit on the wall. It houses spare towels, soaps, etc. I think it’s important to keep floorspace clear in a small room so I’ve used shelves or the wall for storage, keeping the floor clear.

Even if I say so myself, I think it’s a clever idea to dispense toilet paper in a little cube.

Of course all projects start with a mood board, here’s mine.

And yes, my inspiration was the Mona Lisa. I came about that inspiration through a long winded chain of events that I won’t bore you with here, but I felt that there was a cunning play on words with having a picture that hangs in the Louvre in the loo, making it my Loovre!

And here is the original, still hanging safely in the Louvre.

And here is my print from Amazon hanging in my Loovre.
So, no masterpieces were stolen in process of this makeover.

The brown themed mosaic tiling running through the shower had always been something that held me back from decorating this space, as I
mentioned earlier.  So restricting.
As soon as Mona inspired me to go with the green and brown palette displayed in her iconic picture, I came up with a solution for those mosaic tiles. Green nail varnish.
Yes I splodged varnish on random tiles in the mosaic to bring the green into the shower.  It now looks like it was meant to be.

I accessorized with many things from around the house. The pampas grass comes from the garden and is set in a lovely heavy cast-iron vase, which was my mum’s.
It is a universal truth that objects of great importance should be housed in the downstairs loo, right?

Yes, the before pictures really do show that the room had no soul before I got loose on it. I think it’s what you call meh.  I think it has soul in bucketloads now - do you?

The plastic toilet seat needed replacing, that is clear. Inspired by Mona’s colour palette, I flew with the brown in the picture and bought a dark-stained wooden seat from Amazon.

I already had the smaller fake pampas grass which I thought would pair nicely with mummy pampas grass in the corner.  I think that adds a cute touch.
You can’t see it in this pic but the storage unit is now screwed to the wall above the pampas.

In such a small space I thought it was it was important to keep the floor clear. The elephant which housed the cleaning materials previously together with waste paper bin and the elephant bathmat all found a new home elsewhere in the house, more on that in a later post.

I have to say that several months on I am still uplifted each time I step into the Loovre.  What amazes me is that you can create such difference in a space with very little money but with more than a little thought, and thought is free, currently at least!

And when the project was finished, my treat to self was to indulge in a proper sign to go over the door. I really like that touch!

In fact there are many touches in this little space that please me.
Are there things from this makeover that you particularly like, or that maybe inspire you to make changes in your home?  Please tell me in the comments, I’d love to hear.

I’ve put together a short video of the bathroom makeover, you can find it on YouTube following this link https://youtu.be/vG7NDaErJ70?si=5EAdTHvOiu6Ki_b4

What I did In October

Northern Lights

Early in the month we were blessed with the most spectacular display that nature could provide.

The northern lights!

I’ve not seen them before, but it was something definitely that I hoped that I would see once in my lifetime.  I was so lucky that it happened quite spontaneously.

My son phoned to suggest I look out at the north west night sky.  And this is what I saw!
The intensity of color was mind blowing.

The lights were seen elsewhere in the UK. Above is a photograph sent to me by a friend in Northumbria.
The lights were different throughout the uk.

I know the photos are perhaps repetitious, but I was so excited. I just could not stop clicking.

Sorry about the repetition but I just couldn’t stop snapping!

Earlier in the evening, the lights took on a totally different spectrum, much lighter and softer.

The pastels were extremely pretty too. Yes, not as dramatic as the reds and greens that appeared later in the evening but pretty all the same.

My photographs were taken from my bedroom window or in the front garden, so I didn’t have to spend two weeks traveling up to Norway to see the spectacular, at most I just had to step outside the front door.  So easy!
Thank you, nature you did me proud.

Black Tie Do

I was also blessed with an invite to a black tie event. This was my first in 15+ years. I was able to dig out from the archive several evening dresses that I’ve never been able to give away, even though I did believe I would never go to a black tie again in my life!

This August Silk slip dress was my choice for the event.

It was nice to get dolled up and OUT!

Funny how life throws these things at you, some good and some not so good. This evening was definitely good, but the aftermath, not so much.  A day later I contracted Covid, probably at the event, and ended up feeling poorly for three weeks and still counting.  It did put my weekly posting schedule back a little, but that’s life.

Moth holes!

As I said, this was our first black tie event in close to two decades. TP discovered that his tux had been feasted on by naughty little moths.  We did think to attempt to repair the holes, but as they were on the shoulders of the jacket my darning would invariably be visible to all at the ball, so I bit the bullet and bought him a new suit from
good old Marks & Spencer‘s.

Move over James Bond, there’s a new smoothie in town.

We were very impressed with the speed of delivery, the quality and the superb slim line of the dinner suit.
If you happen to get an invite to a black tie event (yes I know that’s not so likely as we age) …

… and should you too discover that moths have done some serious damage to your hubs’ suit too, then I strongly recommend heading over to Marks & Spencer‘s and having a look at what’s on offer there.

Oh and a friend recommended these moth traps to thwart the pesky little blighters.

  🤞 they work.

Purchases

Coming up in a post soon will be details of the jeggings I’ve become rather addicted to. Here is a little sneaky preview.

Yes, jeggings have become a vital element of my retirement uniform of late.  #iwearwhatiwant

And talking of my retirement uniform, let’s move on to

What I wore

The short answer is not a lot. What with prepping myself for the ball which takes a surprisingly long amount of time as you age, and then the Covid weeks following the ball, there is not a lot to report.

Khaki jumper, gilet and khaki jeggings (as I say, more on them in another post)

Grey cashmere jumper and jeans, the old gilet fave again

Another day, another variation on grey jumper and jeans, here with an added grey cardi.

As I age I am drawn to long jumpers.

And you will not see a front tuck exposing this 75 year tum!

The silver and pearl pendant was handmade by a local lady about 65 years ago.

Gosh, I did make grey jeans my October uniform and grey my colour of the month!  Here with a long line grey hoodie and sketchers.

I’m nothing if not consistent!

But I did get out of uniform once!
Here’s my waiting-at-the-bus-stop outfit.
Black jeans and blazer, red cashmere jumper.
And I took this outfit on a bus ride into town for a date lunch with TP!

Cheers!

So yes, it’s been mostly a jumper and jeggings/jeans sort of month. I’m hoping that as I start to feel better, I will up my game, but three weeks after contracting the pesky virus and I’m still not up to scratch when it comes to dressing - just ditching the daytime PJs has been a big thing.  So sorry, not sorry!

And that, dear reader, brings us up to speed on the month of October. Not a lot to report, could do better on the outfits front, but we’ll find out if I do in next month’s enthralling episode of What I Did In …!

A la perchoine,

Mary x.

And whilst you’re here, it would be nice if you subscribe to the blog, ‘‘tis but a moment’s work for you and it helps me to gauge how I’m doing.

Thank you!

The Pout Gets New Specs!

Hello, lovely readers.

Well, it is said that the best laid plans of mice and men oft go awry, and that is certainly the case with this mouse’s plans.
I planned to give you my take on burgundy 2024.
Join an instagram skirt challenge.
I did plan loosely to start creating YouTube content in juxtaposition to this recently re-launched blog.
However, Covid had other ideas it turns out that the ball I attended last week in all my finery was a bit of a super spreader and for the first time ever the photographer and I came down with Covid a day or so later after the event.  That’ll teach us!!

I won’t bore you with all of the boring stuff about how I felt because I would think practically everyone reading this has been there and got the Covid t shirt, so I’m late to the party and could tell you nothing new as an entry-level rookie so let’s move on.

I haven’t been out. I haven’t worn clothes. I haven’t done anything in the last week that could justify a current post. However, I am excited to share something with you. My new specs!

And here they are!

My old specs were many years old, scuffed and scratched, wonky and suffering from plastic fatigue (I think that’s a thing). A lens was close to popping out.  They had recently become such a mess that when I ordered new ones a few days before a gala event my sweet optician declared “no way are you going to the ball in those old glasses” and made sure that Cinderella’s new specs were ready in time, as she felt embarrassed that my bashed-around glasses might be seen anywhere near a ball gown!

The @cartier specs arrived the day before the event so yes, I did go to the ball and in style.

Thank you Suzanne and the helpful team at @trouteaud_opticians, you saved the day!

#cartierspectacles #cartiereyewear #cartierframes #trouteaudopticians #retirementdressing #stylisheyewear

I believe I’m a person whose face needs specs.  Especially to hide badly applied eye make up - I’m so out of the make up habit these days!

One of these frames will be my reactive glasses !

I kissed quite a few frogs in the optician’s shop before finding The Ones.
I knew my newbies were The Ones as soon as I slipped them on; they felt comfortable and secure, I felt, err classy,  and I think they flatter my face.
I didn’t pay particular attention to the logo on the side, until I got to the till - ouch!  But you get what you pay for eh. I think they are definitely worth the price tag because they do feel solid and they do feel like they will last many years.   My optician tells me they’re made in France and therefore they should be substantially built.

My oldies lasted seven years it works out, but they were showing huge signs of wear and tear and over time the frame had gone wonky and one side was half way down my face. It’s funny how you don’t notice these things until you’re in opticians shop staring at the wonky glasses and realizing you’ve been wearing them for maybe a few years looking like an all-day drunk, which I can assure you I am not !

I just had to photograph the whole suite of packaging that came with these glasses.   I thought the packaging matches the solid feel of the specs.

Yes, I had to look up the logo because I’ve never had anything Cartier before!  I’m not a logo person. I’m not a designer person, but I did feel that I was buying something solid, some that will last, just from the feel of the specs and the packing it comes in.

If you are looking for a new pair of glasses, then I really do recommend this make, and this style.
When I’m Covid-free I intend to go back to the optician to buy a second (cheaper!) pair with reactive lenses to wear comfortably outdoors, on the beach etc.  I’ll let you know how that goes

Do you have prescription glasses,?
How do you get on with reactive prescription glasses if you have those?
Do you have glasses that last years,?

I’d love to hear your thoughts.

And before I leave you, I’m going to kindly ask that you subscribe to my blog. I’m trying to build up this blog again, resurrecting it after a hiatus of some time.   I believe blogs have a place, a place of peace and escape.  I think increasing subscribers does something to algorithms but I’m not sure what!  I may find out!!
But increased subscriptions us also good for me to see that people are following me and new people are finding me, and hopefully encourages me to go on providing you with a cosy space where I’m not trying to encourage you to buy.  So if you like my content just the way it is , and if you want to hear more, please subscribe .
I have plans to add more diverse things on this blog, make shorter quickie posts etc.
Heck, I may even build up a YouTube channel, once this Covid shifts!
So it wouldn’t hurt to subscribe to my blog.  It doesn’t cost you anything, it’s as easy as a click of a button and heaven knows you may enjoy getting notifications of things to come.

Look forward to seeing you soon!

A la perchoine,
Mary x.
